Introduction.
This simple diagnostic tool enables a quick assessment of the developmental potential of a small business. It also identifies initial foci for intervention activities intended to overcome probable barriers to future development.

What does it do?
The tool uses 39 multiple choice questions to be answered by the owner manager . Depending upon the answers given the particular enterprise is then allocated a business type according to a classification system derived from research undertaken in the Centre for Enterprise at Manchester Metropolitan University. The classification system comprises four business types; Limited Exploiters, Opportunistic Learners, Effective Exploiters and Dynamic Learners. Brief descriptors are provided with the resulting evaluation.

How use ?
The output evaluation takes the form of a short report that identifies the classification and suggested initial course of action needed to help the business increase its development potential. As the business develops repeated use of the tool will help assess organisational development. It is also advisable that further advice and support is sought in the light of suggested action.
